A mental health-focused GP consultation can feel intimidating if you have never had one before. You may worry about what to say, how much to share or whether your concerns will be taken seriously. The consultation is confidential, supportive and designed to help you take the next step.
You do not need to arrive with perfect words. Dr Sebastião’s approach is calm, professional and patient-centred, helping you clarify what is happening and what support may be appropriate.
During a standard 30-minute consultation you may discuss symptoms, stressors, mood, sleep, physical health, medication history, medical background and previous mental health care. You may also explore whether a referral, report, follow-up or further assessment is needed.
Brief questionnaires completed beforehand can make the consultation more efficient. If forms feel daunting, tell the practice. You can discuss your concerns during the appointment, although extra time may be required and billed accordingly.
Mental health concerns often affect both mind and body. Anxiety can feel physical; burnout affects sleep, concentration and energy; depression can affect appetite and physical wellbeing. A GP with an interest in mental health can consider that whole picture.
The goal is not to judge or rush you. It is to create a safe medical space where concerns can be heard and practical next steps planned.
